Find out how ! Fenesta.com/Monsoon-Proof Mumbai: Unable to fathom the fact that her two bundles of joy were premature babies and fighting to keep fit, a 22-year-old woman jumped off the first floor of Sion Hospital on Wednesday morning. Madhuri Nikam was brought to the hospital on August 26 after giving birth to premature twins - a boy and a girl - at a central hospital in Ulhasnagar for treatment and recuperation. Yesterday at 9.40 am, after feeding her twins, Nikam went to the first floor of the hospital and jumped out of the window rendering her a paraplegic. Explaining her condition, a senior doctor said, "Even though she fell from a small height, she landed on her neck, injuring her spinal cord. She has suffered irreversible damage. Her legs are paralysed and surgery will be of little help." Some doctors attribute Nikam's suicide attempt to postpartum depression. However, Dr Sandhya Kamat, dean of Sion Hospital, said, "I have spoken to doctors about Nikam and they say that she did not display any symptoms." Dr Kamat also added that after Nikam gained consciousness she would be sent for psychiatric counselling also. Her husband Ravi was in a state of shock. He said, "I had gone to get some breakfast for her. When I returned I was told that my wife had jumped from the hospital. She was such a jovial person, I don't know why she would do it." The family is also afraid of the mounting hospital bills. "I have paid Rs. 2,500 for a CT-scan and have had to buy a neck collar for her from outside which cost Rs. 600. I cannot bear these costs," said Ravi, who is a painter in Ulhasnagar. Sub Inspector, Sion Hospital, Ganesh More, said, "We have not yet registered a case but have taken the statements of the family members. Once she gains consciousness, we will record her statements." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bhojpuri actor Ravi Kishan's maid commits suicide Press Trust of India, Updated: September 10, 2011 22:08 IST Comments Ads by Google Create Blogger Slideshow – Create Free Travel Slideshow From Your Photos. Share It On Your Blog! tripwow.tripadvisor.com/slideshow Mumbai: Police today claimed that the domestic help of Bhojpuri actor Ravi Kishan, who allegedly committed suicide by jumping from a high-rise where the actor resides, might have taken the extreme step as she was "depressed" and felt "lonely" in the city. 22-year-old Rubi Sahani, on Friday, plunged to death from the 14th floor in Garden Estate Apartments in Bangur Nagar area of suburban Malad. According to sources, the actor and his wife Preeti have been questioned in connection with the incident. Ruby, who had been working at the Kishans' flat for the past two months, fled to Mumbai from her native place at Mathura in Uttar Pradesh after she could not bear the torture inflicted by her husband and in-laws, they said. Police said they have also spoken to the actor's neighbours and family members and have ruled out any foul play. Preeti, in her statement to police, said that the behaviour of the victim was eccentric at times. She would stay away from the house for two to three days and did not say where she had been after returning, Preeti said. The family members of Ruby have been informed about her death. The 22-year-old locked herself in the bathroom of the house and then jumped to death, police said. However, no suicide note was found. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Court martialled female IAF officer commits suicide Press Trust of India, Updated: September 12, 2011 15:56 IST Comments Ads by Google The Economist Magazine – 12 Issues @ Rs. 500 + Full access on iPhone, iPad & Android. EconomistSubscriptions.com Palamu district, Jharkhand: Fed up of government apathy, over 150 farmers in a village in Jharkhand's Palamu district have decided to send a petition to Chief Minister Arjun Munda, asking for permission to take their lives. Their shocking decision comes after incessant rains washed away most of the crop in their village and the areas around it, leaving farmers with no means of livelihood. They say the damage caused due to excessive rain could have been prevented by a dam on the river in their village, but the project has been stuck in red tape since 1976. "All my land is under water. We have received only hollow assurances from the government so far," said Mritunjay, a farmer. Palamu is one of India's most drought prone districts. Over the last two years, farmers lost their crop because it rained too little. This year, there has been too much rain. Even the government admits a dam on the river here could have solved many problems. "It is extremely necessary to build the dam. We are gathering all possible information regarding this," said Avadhesh Upadhayaya, Deputy Development Commissioner of Palamu district. The villagers' threat might just seem rhetoric, but driven by desperation, and with no hope for the future, perhaps, these villagers feel threats like these are the only way to get a passive and inert government to act. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3 medical students attempt suicide for fear of failing in exam Anant Zanane, Updated: September 03, 2011 15:01 IST Comments Ads by Google Monsoon Proof Windows – Prevent Rain from seeping into your building.
