Right to health --India

I just came across the efforts towards right to health. They inform that if family income from all sources is upto 4000/-per month, all members of such family are eligible for free treatment at any hospital - private and government. No document or documentary proof is needed. Any such patient can just walk into the hospital and ask for treatement under EWS category. Such patient or his or her near relative has to give a declaration of income on a form which hospital would provide. Apart from that there is no other formality. If you or any body else need my help, please don't hesitate to get in touch with Mr. Ashok Agarwal on his mobile no. +91-9811101923 who is a member of the monitoring team. Every such private hospital has a EWS Nodal Officer which can be enquired from the reception. Hospitals are also required to have EWS Desk at the reception.

Link for Government of Delhi website: http://www.delhi.gov.in/wps/wcm/connect/DoIT_Health/health/related+links/information+regarding+free+treatment

Link for: Guidelines for provision of free treatment facilities to patients of EWS category in private hospitals in pursuance of directions issued by the Hon’ble High Court of Delhi in WP ( C)

no 2866/2002 in the matter of Social Jurist Vs GNCT Delhi: http://www.delhi.gov.in/wps/wcm/connect/DoIT_Health/health/related+links/information+regarding+fee+treatment+in+private+hospitals/guidelines+for+govt.+and+pvt.+hospitals+in+social+jurist+case

Hope this will be useful and the poor get their right to free health.
All the best
Warm regards

15 Famous People With Personality Disorders

15 Famous People With Personality Disorders
http://www.onlinedegree.net/15-famous-people-with-personality-disorders/

At the risk of sounding like the awful US Weekly segment devoted to showing how stars are just like us because they also buy gasoline and eat food (who knew?), famous people are, well, people. They're no better or worse than anyone else, and no less susceptible to things like personality disorders or emotional or mental instability. Unfortunately, problems like that tend to be pretty heavily stigmatized in Hollywood, which drives those who suffer from them to ignore or hide their problems, which only makes them worse. If there's anything to be gleaned from the collective stories of these famous people who've suffered from personality disorders -- some of whom are famous because of those disorders -- it's that it's never too late to get help, and it's always OK to be honest with people about what you're going through.

1. Carrie Fisher: Carrie Fisher has made no secret of her struggles with substance abuse and bipolar disorder. Stephen Fry (who appears later on this list) also suffers from the disease, also known as manic depression, and Fisher appeared on a TV special he did about the disease and its various stigmas and myths. As Fisher said a few years ago, "It is really important to see a doctor, particularly a psychiatrist who specializes in mental illness."

2.Herschel Walker: In his autobiography, former running back Herschel Walker revealed that he suffered from dissociative identity disorder, or what used to be called multiple personality disorder. As a result of the warring personalities, Walker says he doesn't remember the moment or even the season that he won the Heisman Trophy. "I feel the greatest achievement of my life will be to tell the world my truth," he wrote.

3.# Howard Hughes: In his prime, Howard Hughes was known for being a pioneer in business, aviation, and filmmaking -- three skill sets that merged when he designed a new cantilevered bra for Jane Russell -- but now he's sadly remembered as a recluse driven to crippling depths by obsessive-compulsive disorder. Yet even his fixation on Russell's physique was a sign of his mind's inability to let things alone. In December 1947, he spent four months in his private screening room, holed up like an animal. He spent most of the end of his life hiding from public view and addicted to various medications.

4.Paula Deen: Paula Deen is known to TV viewers as a cook unafraid to use staggering amounts of butter on everything, but she's also struggled with anxiety disorders. A bout of depression in her early 20s led to an onset of agoraphobia, and she became basically housebound for close to 20 years. She spent most of her time cooking for her family because it allowed her to pursue a skill without having to set foot outside her home. She didn't even know much about her agoraphobia until learning about the disorder on an episode of The Phil Donahue Show, which encouraged her to re-examine things. Her approach worked for her, but most people are better off talking with a professional.

5.Elton John: A persistent but dangerous myth about bulimia nervosa is that it only affects women, or teenage girls. In truth, it can affect people of both genders and all ages. In a 2002 interview with Larry King, Elton John revealed not only that he'd been aware of Princess

6.Brooke Shields: In 2005, Brooke Shields went public with her battles against postpartum depression, which had wrecked her after the birth of her first child in 2003. The depression manifests itself in fatigue, diminished sexual urges, erratic eating patterns, and an inability to stay emotionally balanced. It's a common problem for many women (and occasionally a few men), and Shields' problems were likely complicated by personal stresses including a previous miscarriage and the death of her father shortly before the birth. As many people remember, she was subsequently blasted by Tom Cruise for seeking psychiatric help to overcome the problem.

7.# John Nash: John Nash's lifelong struggle with paranoid schizophrenia was ably documented in the 2001 film A Beautiful Mind. Although the man was a mathematical genius who was wooed by the Ivy League and who eventually won a Nobel Prize, he began to believe that a shadowy group of men was chasing him with the intention of starting a new government. Some medications worked better than others, and through sheer perseverance, Nash eventually began to climb out of the mental hole he'd dug.

8.# Michael Phelps: Amid the insane number of world records and Olympic gold medals, Michael Phelps is just another guy who's had to deal with a problem that's confronted many other people: attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. After an inability to concentrate led to the diagnosis when Phelps was in middle school, he worked with his parents and teachers to impose a better structure on his life and learning habits. Coupled with the right medication and dedication, he was able to overcome the issue.

9 Stephen Fry: Stephen Fry's been making fantastic comedy since the early 1980s, but it wasn't until years later that he discussed his struggles with bipolar disorder. His documentary, Stephen Fry: The Secret Life of a Manic Depressive, examined his ups and downs while also interviewing other celebrities who've dealt with the issue. Fry even attempted suicide at one point, but he's been able to push through and take a dryly positive on the affair: "I rely on it to give my life a sense of adventure, and I think most of the good about me has developed as a result of my mood swings."

10. 10. Richard Dreyfuss: Richard Dreyfuss was one of the many who appeared on Fry's documentary, and he spoke about his own battles with bipolar disorder. Before being diagnosed, Dreyfuss would often lose control of his emotions, but work and medication have turned him around. "I reclaimed a career," he says of his ability to not only live with the disease but thrive.
11. Billy Joel: Billy Joel's latter-day battles with alcohol were popular tabloid fodder, but the man had some serious issues with depression when he was younger. Career setbacks in the early 1970s led to an onset so severe that he tried to kill himself by drinking furniture polish. The only thing that saved him was being taken to the hospital by his drummer. He was eventually able to bounce back and resume his musical career.
12. Drew Carey: For all his outward good humor, Drew Carey's dealt with some serious problems in his day. His 1997 autobiography revealed that he was once molested and that he later suffered bouts of depression and even attempted suicide (twice) by swallowing copious amounts of sleeping pills. It was his time in the military in his 20s that helped him discover purpose and direction and helped shape the personality he'd eventually use in his stand-up comedy.
13. Brian Wilson: Beach Boy Brian Wilson's mental health issues aren't news -- there have been songs about them -- but they serve as a reminder to everyone else that the earlier you seek diagnosis and help, the better. His creative worries and despondency deepened when the release of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band forced him to abandon his band's own Smile, and he spent years locked away in his home. He was later diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type, as well as hints of other ailments. Thankfully, he's made improvements, even releasing Smile after decades of getting it just right.

14. Jim Carrey: Extreme moods are no strangers to comedians, and Jim Carrey's no exception. In 2004, he revealed that he's had problems with depression, and took medication for a while before trying a regimen that mixed dietary restrictions with spiritual focus.
15. Mike Wallace: Legendary journalist Mike Wallace was frank about his depression in a recent interview, saying, "There's nothing, repeat, nothing to be ashamed of when you're going through a depression. If you get help, the chances of your licking it are really good. But, you have to get yourself onto a safe path." Wallace sank into depression in the mid-1980s, spurred by a libel lawsuit filed by Gen. Westmoreland about a piece Wallace had done on Vietnam two years earlier. His keys to survival were the same ones for everyone: treatment and support.

Hi,
My name is Alicia Raimundo and I was wondering if you have to apply for the right to hold a surviving suicide loss conference? I was thinking trying to organize one in Toronto, or waterloo next year, since Hamilton and Windsor is not a feasible commute for many. I would really enjoy the opportunity to organize one of these conferences!
Thanks!

AMERICAN FOUNDATION FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION
NATIONAL SURVIVORS OF SUICIDE DAY 2010
TECHNICAL INFORMATION FOR SITES
This technical information should be given directly to your conference site’s Local
Technical Organizer. Any technical questions should be directed to AFSP’s National
Technical Coordinator, Kenny Reff, of Limelight Communications, at
afsp@LimelightDC.com or 703-242-4596.
AFSP’s National Survivors of Suicide Day broadcast will take place on Saturday,
November 20, 2010 from 1:00pm to 2:30pm Eastern Standard Time. Local
conference sites have the option of showing the broadcast by live webcast or DVD.
This document contains technical instructions for both options.
Note for Conference Sites Outside of the United States:
If you live in a time zone where the live webcast would be impractical, you may show
the webcast “on-demand” at 1:00pm local time. This will be possible even if you are in a
time zone ahead of Eastern Standard Time in the United States (GMT-5). A special link
will be emailed to your Local Technical Organizer with testing instructions by November
15.
REQUIREMENTS TO SHOW WEBCAST:
1. Register: The Primary Organizer must register the conference site in advance at
http://www.limelightdc.com/clientarea/afsp_telecon_11_10/afspregsite10.htm. If you
are not sure if your site is registered, please check the list of 2010 participating cities
at www.afsp.org/survivorday. Only registered sites are listed there.
2. A high-speed Internet connection:
You can use a good-quality DSL, cable modem or other broadband connection of
300KB/sec or higher. The webcast will be delivered at a rate for 56K dial-up
connections, and also at 300KB and 500KB for broadband connections. The
broadband speeds are vastly preferable for projection to a large group. In fact, the
56K dial-up rate should really be viewed as primarily an audio due to the poor video
quality of dial-up. Check your download connection speed at
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ (Select the city closest to you.)
3. A Windows PC or Mac computer:
This year, the program will be webcast using Flash Video. This is the same
technology used by You Tube and many other video sites. Chances are very good
that you have the required Flash plug-in on your Internet browser. At a minimum,
version 9 is required. Version 10 is preferred. You can check what version of Flash you
have by going to You Tube, playing a video, and right-clicking on the video window. One of
the selections will be "About Flash x", where "x" is the version of Flash you are running."
The latest version can be downloaded from Adobe at
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
Rev. 3-17-10 Page 2 of 4
Your computer must also have a sound card and speakers.
4. Video presentation equipment:
If you plan to have a large gathering, an LCD projector and screen is recommended.
The projector will take the output of your computer and project it on a screen.
5. Audio amplification system appropriate for the size of the room and the audience.
The audio signal can be obtained from the line-out jack of your computer.
TESTING THE LIVE WEBCAST IN ADVANCE:
There are a number of things that can cause poor performance during a webcast, so be
sure to run the following tests in advance to ensure good performance on National
Survivors of Suicide Day. Run the first test on November 15. Run the second test on the
morning of the event. The Flash Player will default to the 300KB speed. Use the Low,
Medium and High buttons on the player to change the speed and quality of the
streaming webcast. If you experience problems with playback, choose a lower
connection speed.
If you encounter problems during your tests, check the following:
Network Firewalls. If your IT department has a firewall on the network, it could
slow or stop the webcast. Talk to your IT person prior to the event to see about
temporarily disabling it.
Local firewall. Some computers also have firewall software installed. You may
see evidence of this in the tray on the lower right of Windows. Glide your mouse
over the icons to see if one is a firewall. If so, right click on it. There will often be
a disable option in the menu that pops up.
Traffic on the network. Just because you’re on a network does not mean you
have unlimited access. If many users are on it at the same time, your connection
speed may decrease.
Old Flash plug-in or no Flash plug-in. Make sure you’re running version 9 or
later. See above for download links to update if necessary.
Slow computer. Make sure all other programs are closed. Reboot, then let the
computer sit idle for 3-5 minutes prior to connecting (this allows certain
background program kernels to initialize)
1. Test 5 Days Prior to Event:
A 24-hour live webcast test will commence 6:00am November 15, 2010, through
6:00am EST November 16, 2010. During this test, you will connect to the same
servers that will deliver the actual program. It is highly suggested that you conduct
your test on the same computer using the same connection you will use during the
event. PLEASE USE THIS TIME TO TEST YOUR WEBCAST RECEIVING
CAPABILITY.
Rev. 3-17-10 Page 3 of 4
Webcast Link:
The link for the webcast test and live program can be found at:
http://www.afsp.org/survivordaywebcast. The Flash Player will default to the 300KB
speed. Use the Low, Medium and High buttons on the player to change the speed
and quality of the streaming webcast. If you experience problems with playback,
choose a lower connection speed.
Please note that the links on this page may not be active, or may show other
program material prior to the test day on November 15 and prior to the live webcast
on November 20, 2010.
2. Day-of-Event Test and Live Webcast
On National Survivors of Suicide Day, November 20, 2010, the webcast link will
begin transmitting a live test at 9:00am EST. It is highly suggested that you conduct
your test on the same computer using the same connection you will use during the
event. During this test, you will connect to the same servers that will deliver the
actual program.
Go to http://www.afsp.org/survivordaywebcast and click on the National Survivors of
Suicide Day webcast link. The Flash Player will default to the 300KB speed. Use the
Low, Medium and High buttons on the player to change the speed and quality of the
streaming webcast. If you experience problems with playback, choose a lower
connection speed. Once you receive the test successfully, you should stay
connected. The broadcast will automatically begin at 1:00pm EST and end at
2:30pm.
Note: Once you’ve got the signal, you may wish to display the webcast full screen.
Although this does make the image bigger, it will also make it less clear. To change
your display to full screen, use the appropriate button on the Flash video player.
When the webcast is finished, press the Esc key on your keyboard to return to
standard view
If any questions/problems come up just prior to or during the program, call AFSP’s
National Technical Coordinator, Kenny Reff of Limelight Communications at
703-242-4596.
REQUIREMENTS TO SHOW DVD:
1. Register: If you opt to show the DVD, you must register your site absolutely no later
than Monday, November 8, 2010 and select DVD as the preferred method of
showing the program. AFSP will ship the DVD to the Primary Organizer by regular
mail during the week prior to National Survivors of Suicide Day.
2. Video presentation equipment:
You will be receiving a standard DVD that can be played in any set-top DVD player,
or on computers equipped to play DVDs.
Note for Conference Sites Outside of the United States: The DVD is in NTSC
Rev. 3-17-10 Page 4 of 4
format. If you do not have a NTSC DVD player, please see information above on
how to show webcast.
If you plan to have a large gathering, an LCD projector and screen are
recommended. You can use either a DVD player or a computer to feed the
projector. If using a DVD player, simply connect the video output from the DVD
player to a video input on the projector. Usually, “RCA” cables are used for this. If
using a computer, connect one end of the SVGA cable that came with the projector
to the SVGA output of the computer, and the other end to the SVGA input on the
projector.
3. Audio amplification equipment:
Don’t forget your audio will need to be amplified as well! You will need a PA system
appropriate for the size of the room and the audience. If using a set-top DVD player,
connect the audio outputs from the player to the PA system. This is usually done
using “RCA” cables. If using a computer to project the DVD, you will need an audio
cable that has a stereo mini plug on one end (for the computer) and two RCA
connectors on the other end (for the amplifier). All cables mentioned in this section
can be purchased at an electronics store like Best Buy, Circuit City or Radio Shack.

Buddha's tips on managing a stressfull/disturbed mind

WORTH READING AND A GOOD EXAMPLE TO FOLLOW

Once when Buddha was walking from one town to another with a few of his followers, they happened to pass a lake.

They stopped there and Buddha said to one of his disciples, I am thirsty. Go and get me some water from that lake there.

The disciple walked up to the lake. When he reached it, he noticed that some people were washing clothes in the water, and right at that moment, a bullock cart started crossing through the lake.As a result, the water became very muddy, very turbid. The disciple thought, How can I give this muddy water to Buddha to drink! So he came back and said to Buddha, The water in the lake is very muddy. I dont think it is fit to drink. After about half an hour, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back to the lake and get him some water to drink. The disciple obediently went back to the lake. This time he found that the lake had absolutely clear water in it. The mud had settled down and the water above it looked fit to be had. So he collected some water in a pot and brought it to Buddha.

Buddha looked at the water, and then he looked up at the disciple and said, See what you did to make the water clean. You let it be, and the mud settled down on its own and then you got clear water. Your mind is also like that! When it is disturbed, just let it be. Give it a little time. It will settle down on its own. You dont have to put in any effort to calm it down.

It will happen. It is effortless.

How to beat exam stress

Johnson Thomas, Director , Aasra

Exam stress is more rampant in India because we have a larger population under the age group of 30 ( 60%), high risk group for suicide and depression worldwide is between 15 and 40 yrs. And we have a peculiar culture and attitude that stresses on academics above all other talents. more weightage is given to academics than any other achievement. Even life skills are neglected in favor of academic achievements. So when stress happens students find themselves inadequately equipped for coping with difficult situations.

We need a better understanding of the role of stress in accelerating depressive illnesses which in turn accentuate the risk of early death by suicide. Systemic changes and concerted awareness campaigns are required to bring about a changes in behavior with regards to priorities in life. Stress-management interventions for high-risk groups at an early age can also have a positive impact on early risk trajectories, yle choices, Systemic changes, informed lifestyle choices and Stress management, combined with promoting healthy lifestyles in adolescence and young adulthood, are more likely to generate long-term economic and social advantages.

Aasra doesn't give advice. We only facilitate the process of de-stressing in times of crisis. We are a crisis intervention centre for suicide prevention and pride ourselves for not forcing our views on our clients/callers. Through the process of non-directive counselling which we term as befriending- we empower our clients to make decisions likely to alleviate their stress as best suited to their unique situation.

tips for students to beat stress..

Students have a lot of stress especially during the exam period. Exams themselves are a compelling experience that causes stress, because the stakes are high: the dreams that students make for their lives, the pressure of unfulfilled dreams of their parents, the beginning of a career, the expectations that they have for themselves, the expectations parents have for their children. The exam stress is usually associated with the fear that students will disappoint their parents by their performance, and with the expectations they have from themselves. Physical symptoms:( abdominal pains, headaches, rapid pulse, sweating, tremor, nausea, muscle tension)

Stress is created by the negative thoughts created and grow inside our mind and in the worst case, stress can completely block our mind, and lead us to abandon our effort.Stress can:Limit the ability of our actual performance and Makes us suffer, both physically and mentally. The symptoms are usually a Reduction of performance(Difficulty in concentration, mental blockade (black out), difficulty in organizing information), Psychological symptoms( negative thoughts, low self-esteem , irritability and insomnia)

Tips to manage/reduce stress
Prepare well before exams( at least start 2-3 months in advance) if possible. if you are the type to study at the last minute then concentrate on important chapters deduced from previous question paper sets. Do not waste time overexerting or else you will not do well.

Identify capability and learn as per your capability and not as per yours or others expectations
be practical and manage time as per your individual capacity to absorb information
stay away from those you percieve to be better at studies than you, especially during the exam period
accept your performance for what it is rather than what you want it to be
Remember there is always a second chance at an exam. Tthere is no reason to be ashamed if you do badly in one. it's just that your skills lie in a different (as yet unexplored) direction. There is no reason to lose hope ever!
