MUMBAI: Tormented with threats by her former lover to spill the beans on their relationship, a housewife from Mira Road hanged herself at her home. After being blackmailed by her former boyfriend a married woman from Mira Road hanged herself at her home.
The victim, Suraiya Thanawala (33), had married recently and settled down with her husband, Salim, in Mira Road. Prior to her marriage she was "friendly" with Fahim Tambe, a resident of Dongri in Bhayander (W), the two parted ways later, the police said.
However, Tambe was unable to come to terms with the break up. He started harassing Suraiya and demanded Rs 1 lakh to keep their relationship a secret. Police said, Tambe knew that the victim's husband but in-laws were unaware about their relationship.
Suraiya was unable to arrange for the money, the police said. Tambe threatened to provide proof of their relationship to her husband.
Fearing that it would ruin her marriage, Suraiya hanged herself at their home on Wednesday afternoon. The husband returned home in the evening and found her hanging.
While Suraiya had been afraid to confide in her husband, She left behind a suicide note accusing Tambe of blackmailing her. In her suicide note she mentioned that Fahim had demanded Rs one lakh to destroy proof of their relationship.
The police have registered a case of accidental death. A case will be made against the accused after investigations, said senior police inspector Rajendra Mohite.
