HAL director hangs himself at Nandi Hills
TNN Oct 12, 2011, 08.00AM IST
BANGALORE: The body of a 58-year-old director of Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, who was also the company's top test pilot, was on Tuesday found hanging from a tree near a temple at the foot of Nandi Hills, about 60km from Bangalore. Although no suicide note was found at the site of death or at Sqn Ldr (Retd) Baldev Singh's Bangalore home, cops, speaking on condition of anonymity, said it was most likely a case of suicide. He had hanged himself with his turban, police said.
The former Air Force combat pilot who graduated to a high-profile test pilot and later a honcho with HAL, heading its corporate planning and marketing wing, had left his Old Madras Road home at 8am in his silver-colour Maruti SX-4 driven by his driver Ramesh. He had asked the driver to go towards the international airport.
"We reached Devanahalli around 9.30am and Sirji asked me to get down and wait till he returned, saying he had to go and meet a friend. Sirji promised to return within half an hour and drove away," Ramesh told Chikkaballapur police. When Singh didn't return, Ramesh called his mobile and found it switched off. "Immediately, I alerted the HAL office which, in turn, set off a search and alerted the police," he said.
Police began tracking calls from his mobile before it was switched off and traced them to a tower at Nandi Hills. "The car was found parked near Shani Mahatma temple, near Mirza Ismail Circle, at the foot of Nandi Hills," a police officer said. His body was found hanging from a tree near the temple at 11.30am.
"The place is a small hillock called Brahmagiri. Baldev had used his pagdi (turban) to hang himself," an officer said. Close associates attributed Singh's reported suicide to the work pressure.
Singh had spent nearly 38 years of his career flying combat aircraft and testing flying prototypes. He was shifted to his new post less than two months ago. Those who knew Singh said he had resisted becoming a director and his primary love was flying. "Singh was elevated against his wishes. He was happy flying and the sudden shift to a desk job seemed to have disturbed him," a close associate of Singh told TOI.
Police sources, however, said that health issues in the family may have driven Singh to commit suicide.
As the news of Singh's death reached the Senior Officers' Enclave where he lived, his wife Vibhu Singh fainted and had to be admitted to the Command Hospital . Singh is survived by his wife and sons Mohit Singh, who works in the US, and Nimith Singh, who is in Singapore . The body was brought to his house late night.
