Last week while browsing through net and collecting information about depression I stumbled on a survey released by University Health Services (UHS), according to which 80% Harvard students are depressed at sometime during their study at Harvard, Forty-seven percent felt so depressed that it was difficult for them to function and almost 10 percent of undergraduates reported that they had considered committing suicide.... At first I was suspicious of the survey ….I investigated further and to my surprise found that this trend was true in all top colleges ….. In fact the higher your college is rated the higher is stress level among students ….
I was shocked, why would the most successful individuals on earth with whom most of us would love to exchange places, consider suicide as an option???I started searching for reasons …. I found lots of probable reasons like greater academic demands, peer pressure, competition for jobs and scholarships, separation from family and adjustments to becoming independent …. But the root cause for this problem was missing everywhere, which according to me is the tendency of human being of measuring everything by looking at them relatively …. From being among 1% throughout there life, 99% of them are now not in top 1%..... This feeling of not doing well with respect to your peer group leads to huge dissatisfaction and this feeling is universal …. Society also plays an important role by always drawing comprasions among individuals rather than embracing one's individuality ..... According to me one probable reason for its universality lies in our evolutionary past and can be explained by Darwinian Theory ….
But sometimes it’s necessary to view one's life as half full rather than half empty and look at all the achievements one has had in their life and draw satisfaction from it .One should realize that all individuals are unique and have different qualities and needs. If we fall in this vicious cycle of comparative view of oneself then we’ll always find ourselves dissatisfied and chasing things rather than understanding our uniqueness and doing things which gives us satisfaction.

I appreciate your thoughts.....
But u know, when one is in excruciating emotional pain, its very easy to forget all rational thinking. One`s vision becomes very narrow and he/she cant see beyond his/her pain.
how will u deal with such a person?
This is the biggest problem with depression that it creates pessimism in the suffering person and feeds on it and this cycle goes on...... So one has to be very careful when dealing with the depressed person ,they should be empathetic to them and make them speak out because while telling their situation the depressed person might realise the problem and then try to overcome it ..... So by providing them with the conducive environment where they can tell their feelings and situation to someone without getting judged is the most appropriate solution a/c to me because in this process they themselves realise and discover the real problem and solution to it ....
Yes! at Aasra we say that SUICIDE IS THE PERMANENT SOLUTION TO A TEMPORARY PROBLEM........
