AASRA volunteers conducted a workshop for Parents and Students of STD IX at MARTHOMA SCHOOL-GOVANDI , MUMBAI
the workshop was conducted in 2 shifts from ie.11am to 2pm and 3pm to 5 pm as per the convenience of the parents.
Marthoma school is situtated near the slums of Govandi Station. Its a small school struggling to upgrade its standard of education in any which way it can.
The headmistress is very co-operative and understanding and is completely devoted to helping the students and teachers to cope with LIFE in general and depression , despair and exam pressure in particular.
This workshop was the sixth one that we were ocnducting.
To say that the workshop was a success would be an understatement.
The parents and students left with the understanding that
1. communication is important to enhance realtionships.
2. life is worthwhile and education is an important tool to realise dreams.
3. young adults value their independence.
4. parents say many things in anger but do not really mean to hurt the children.
5. students have to lean to say THANK YOU to their parents
6. they could contact AASRA when they are in despair.

One important point that the students brought forth was that tension between the parents in the house affected their focus on studies a lot. Parents realised that keeping a peaceful environment at home relieved the children of stress and they could concentrate on studies better.

@reena.. I hope to always make time for this cause.. since i believe in it. I think the workshop definitely help in achieving a shift in the mindsets of the parents as well as the students. As a follow up, we could interact with the same set again as they near their Xth board exams. That could help them as the pressure would increase causing additional stress.

i agree! we now have a workshp coming on 4th april at north point school...of course we discussed it at length at our regular meeting but whats the one thing that we could do different from our standard workshops to leave a lasting impression in the minds of the teachers..
The workshop at North Point would have teachers as the target group. We could discuss an example wherein the teacher was instrumental in moulding a students life. That could probably influence the teachers and leave a lasting impression on them.
anil: suicide is such a taboo topic... nowadys many young pple are in depression which may lead to suicide.esp in professional colleges...have u ever been friends or knew of someone who was always depressed?
Yes Reena. One of my friends suffered from severe depression and by being with her through that time helped me support her and at the same time taught me that talking it out helps a person deal with the depression a lot better.
