Freedom is a double-edged sword. If used properly, one can live his life in the best way possible. On the other hand, if the freedom is abused, it can affect an individual adversely. Free will, therefore, needs to be exercised with restraint. Each individual has the free will to do what he feels like doing with his life. Suicide, therefore, is an act of free will. However, an act of free will, if it is harmful to an individual, is an abuse of the right of free will by that individual. It is more of an act of cowardice than an act of free will.

frankly, how can u think its an act of cowardice? couldnt it be an act of supreme intellegence and supreme courage?

Intelligence demands that an individual assesses the situation rationally and finds the best way to deal with it. Courage demands that one faces the situation bravely and does not run away from it. Suicide defies both and therefore I think its an act of cowardice.

Anil; yes..! What you makes sense..
but i have a question...
everyone wants to live..there is this innate need to survive..when one decides to commit suicide is nt one exhibiting the opposite of what is innate in man? i.e the need to die?people who take samadhi arent they called courageous men/women?are they not flowing againt the current? dont we applaud people who go make their own paths? explain!

The answer lies in your question itself. As you mentioned, every individual has an innate need to survive. This need for survival is, therefore, the biggest challenge for every individual. As I mentioned earlier, Suicide is a an act of not standing up to that very challenge and running away from it. Not going with the flow and weaving your own path is a challenge in itself. Those who choose their paths defying the norm, are not running away from the challenge that life poses. Instead, they show that they are strong enough to undertake the challenge and face it. Such people deserve the applause they get.

so u consider suicide as running away..
eg. a man who is suffering from a terminal disaease has reached his endurance limit...and wants to die...so what wuld u call that? is he running away or should he take it as a challenge and live a pain ful life??? whatevr is left of it??
