It's a risk we all take- but beware, Pesticide exposure during pregnancy can lead to Autism!

http://covvha.net/

In a new study from California, children with an autism spectrum disorder were more likely to have mothers who lived close to fields treated with certain pesticides during pregnancy.
Proximity to agricultural pesticides in pregnancy was also linked to other types of developmental delay among children.
“Ours is the third study to specifically link autism spectrum disorders to pesticide exposure, whereas more papers have demonstrated links with developmental delay,” said lead author Janie F. Shelton, from the University of California, Davis.
There needs to be more research before scientists can say that pesticides cause autism, she told Reuters Health in an email. But pesticides all affect signaling between cells in the nervous system, she added, so a direct link is plausible.
California is one of only a few states in the U.S. where agricultural pesticide use is rigorously reported and mapped. For the new study, the researchers used those maps to track exposures during pregnancy for the mothers of 970 children.
The children included 486 with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), 168 with a developmental delay and 316 with typical development.
Developmental delay, in which children take extra time to reach communication, social or motor skills milestones, affects about four percent of U.S. kids, the authors write. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one in 68 children has an ASD, also marked by deficits in social interaction and language.
In the new study, about a third of mothers had lived within a mile of fields treated with pesticides, most commonly organophosphates.
Children of mothers exposed to organophosphates were 60 percent more likely to have an ASD than children of non-exposed mothers, the authors report in Environmental Health Perspectives.
Autism risk was also increased with exposure to so-called pyrethroid insecticides, as was the risk for developmental delay. Carbamate pesticides were linked to developmental delay but not ASDs. Read More: http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/health/study-links-pesticides-autism-article-1.1840200

Actor Robin Williams found dead in apparent suicide

(Reuters) - Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams was found dead on Monday from an apparent suicide at his home in Northern California, Marin County Sheriff's Office said. He was 63.
The sheriff's coroner's division said it suspects the death was a suicide due to asphyxia, but the cause of death is still under investigation.
"This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken," Williams's wife Susan Schneider said in a statement.
Williams, who won an Academy Award for his role as a fatherly therapist in 1997's "Good Will Hunting," had been suffering from severe depression recently, his publicist Mara Buxbaum said.
Williams, who introduced his frenetic style on late 1970s TV series "Mork & Mindy" and had struggled with addiction in the past, had entered a Minnesota rehabilitation center last month to help him maintain sobriety.
His representatives at the time said Williams was not using drugs or alcohol but had gone to the center to "fine-tune and focus" his sobriety after working a longer-than-usual schedule.
The Marin County Sheriff's office said it received an emergency call about noon local time on Monday, saying that Williams was unconscious and not breathing at his home near Tiburon, north of San Francisco.
Fellow comedic actor Steve Martin said in a tweet: "I could not be more stunned by the loss of Robin Williams, mensch, great talent, acting partner, genuine soul."

The girl, identified as Yogita, suffered injuries on her hands and her left leg was fractured.

According to police, Yogita lives with his family in New Layalpur Extension area of Delhi.

At around 5.15 PM, she jumped from the third floor of Vaishali Metro Station. She was taken to a nearby hospital.

"Her left leg was fractured and she also suffered injuries in her hands and head. However, her condition is stated to be normal", said a police officer.

Gender Differences in Depression By Nancy Schimelpfening Updated September 19, 2011

Gender Differences in Depression

Updated September 19, 2011

While men and women are basically the same when it comes to the mechanics of depression, there are some subtle differences in male and female depression due to society's expectations of what being a particular gender means, as well as hormonal differences.
1. Gender Differences in Depression Symptoms
Men and women share the same core set of depression symptoms: depressed mood, lack of motivation, loss of pleasure, changes in appetite, sleep disturbances, feelings of guilt and difficulty concentrating. However, studies suggest that some differences in the symptom patterns exhibited by men and women.

  • 2. Gender Differences in the Prevalence of Depression
It has been widely documented that there are gender difference in depression prevalence, with women experiencing major depression about twice as often as men. The lifetime risk of major depression in women is about 20% to 26%, compared to about 8% to 12% for men. This risk exists independent of race or ethnicity.

  • 3. Gender Differences in Suicide
One of the most commonly reported differences in male and female suicide behavior is method selection. Men tend to choose more violent -- and thus more likely to be lethal -- methods, such as hanging, vehicle exhaust gas, asphyxiation and firearms. Women, on the other hand, are more likely to choose self-poisoning.

  • 4. Gender Differences in Response to Antidepressants
There is ongoing controversy about whether men and women respond equally well to antidepressants. A 1996 meta-analysis, which reviewed 35 studies comparing men's and women's responses to the tricyclic antidepressant imipramine, found a statistically significant better response to the drug among the men studied. A later randomized double-blind study, which compared men's and women's responses to imipramine and the SSRI antidepressant sertraline (Zoloft), found that the women responded better to sertraline, while the men responded best to imipramine. It should be noted, however, that when the results were analyzed based upon whether the women had entered menopause, it was found that postmenopausal women responded equally well to both medications. The implication of this is, for unknown reasons, SSRIs work better in the presence of estrogen.
