Befrienders India's National Suicide Prevention Conference hosted by Sneha
Just returned from a fabulous three days of sharing and bonding with fellow volunteers of the Befriending moment which started almost 60 years ago and spans several continents with 455 centers worldwide of which Aasra is a prominent and integral member. The venue for the event was the enchanting 'Green Coconut Resoprt' ECR, Chennai. The conference was hosted by Sneha center Chennai from 23rd to 25th September and included centers from accross the country as well as from Sri Lanka. Aasra volunteers Johnson(Director) , Reena and Nita conducted an interactive workshop on 'Volunteer Ethics'

Annual Befrienders Conderence matters-Host Chennai- center Sneha
Dear All,
Sneha as part of its 25th Anniversary Celebrations is hosting the National Conference of Befrienders India at Chennai from 23rd September to 25th September 2011.
Theme of the Conference :
Befriending – Barriers ,Boundaries & Beyond
VENUE
The Conference will be held at The Green Coconut, a beautiful, spacious resort hotel with conference facilities, situated on ECR, Chennai.
DATES
The Conference commences on 23rd September (9 am) and closes on Sunday 25th September 2011 (2 pm)
COST
Every effort is being made to keep the cost to a minimum by obtaining local sponsors for the conference & workshop.
Accommodation is available at Green Coconut, ECR. Chennai ( Conference Venue)on a double occupancy basis .If single occupancy is required, it will be necessary to pay a premium.

CLOSING DATE FOR ALL BOOKINGS IS 30th July 2011
After the inauguration of the conference each centre will be given 5 minutes to introduce participating delegates and talk about the centre.
TOPICS FOR THE CONFERENCE
. We have identified the following few topics based on the theme of the Conference.
1. Difficulties in reaching out to very young callers.(in the context of the increase in such callers)
2. Understanding beyond words and listening to Non-Verbal cues.
3. The importance of emotional well-being of volunteers
4. Suicide of a caller –How it impacts the centre’s morale and volunteers’ confidence
5. Volunteer Ethics
6. Befriending in the case of suicide pacts/clusters/groups etc
7. The challenges of creating greater awareness of our services
8. Handling extremely abusive and angry callers
9. Befriending in changing times – New Era, New Skills
10 Handling our prejudices, values and judgements
11.Outreach – Going beyond befriending
All the permanent centres may choose any one of the above mentioned topics and let us know their choice. The topics will be allotted on a "first come, first served" basis.
In addition to the above,suggestions of topics falling under the theme of the conference are welcome.
IF YOU ARE ABLE TO SELECT A TOPIC FOR YOUR CENTRE PLEASE INTIMATE YOUR CHOICE BY EMAIL BY CLICKING "REPLY TO ALL" SO THAT OTHERS BECOME AWARE OF YOUR CHOICE AND THEY MAY NOT CHOOSE THE SAME TOPIC.

As regards to your querry, as per the practice there will be no restriction on the number of volunteers to attend the conference from a particular centre. Each centre will be allotted three free bursaries (including the director). If there are more than three from a centre they may have to pay Rs.4000/- (approx) each which includes food, stay and transport charges for the three days of conference. (3 days breakfast and lunch and 2 dinner, stay on double sharing for 3 days and 2 nights and conference charges).
