Indian men have been conditioned to hide away their emotions and build up a macho image lest they be considered wimpy and unmanly. Secondly when men attempt suicide they use surer means to do it. Access to means is much more easier for them than for women. -- Despite being a male-dominated society, men with mental health issues rarely seek help until it is too late, where do you think the society can do better on its part? This again is a cultural problem. Men cant be seen to have problems and with regards to mental health it's even more belittling to the male ego if they are seen to be less than normal. Expectations from society and from women are too harsh as they have to be both breadwinner and problem solver -- Whether in adolescent years or post-marriage, men have it tougher when it comes to expectations from the family. Even now when the times are changing and women are also taking up challenging roles in the society, the stigma remains, how can we create a more inclusive society that treats all, despite their gender, equally? That's a work in progress. Education, Awareness, reverse conditioning from families and emotional and psychological support will go a long way in addressing these issues -- What should a family and close ones do in case a male member shows suicidal tendencies? Show caring and concern, Empathise with him and not criticise or judge him. Help him ventillate about his problems/issues/negative emotions so that he can reach a mental space where he is much more comfortable making rational and logical decisions to resolve his issues/problems Thanks Johnson Thomas Director Aasra
